IELTS Preparation Guide: The Four Skills and How to Raise Your Band Score

Introduction

IELTS is one of the most widely accepted English tests for study, work and migration. A good band score opens doors to universities and visas around the world.

Academic or General Training?

IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration. IELTS General Training is mostly used for work and migration. Listening and Speaking are the same in both; Reading and Writing differ.

Test structure

• Listening: about 30 minutes, four recordings with 40 questions.
• Reading: 60 minutes, three sections with 40 questions.
• Writing: 60 minutes, two tasks; Task 2 counts for more than Task 1.
• Speaking: 11 to 14 minutes, a face-to-face interview in three parts.

Each skill receives a band from 0 to 9, and the overall band is the average rounded to the nearest half band.

What examiners look for

In Writing and Speaking, examiners use public band descriptors: task response or achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy (plus pronunciation for Speaking). Read them and use them to assess your own answers.

Study tips to raise your score

• Learn topic vocabulary in context with flashcards and review it daily.
• Practise Reading under strict time limits: about 20 minutes per section.
• Write one Task 2 essay every two days and ask an AI or a teacher to grade it against the descriptors.
• Record yourself answering Speaking questions and listen back for fillers and repetition.

Where IELTS takes you

Universities, professional bodies and immigration authorities in many countries accept IELTS. Each sets its own minimum band, so check the exact requirement of your target organisation.
