Introduction
The PMP from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is one of the best-known project management credentials worldwide. It shows that you can lead projects using predictive, agile and hybrid approaches.
What is the PMP certification?
To apply you need several years of experience leading projects plus 35 contact hours of project management education (the exact requirements depend on your degree). Once your application is approved you can schedule the exam.
Exam structure
The exam is built on PMI's Examination Content Outline, organised into three domains:
- People: leading and supporting the team, managing conflict, engaging stakeholders.
- Process: scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk and change management.
- Business environment: compliance, benefits delivery and organisational change.
Most questions are situational: "What should the project manager do next?". PMI updates the outline periodically, so check the current version for the exact number of questions, time and domain weights.
Skills covered in the exam
Beyond definitions, you must think like PMI: assess the situation first, collaborate before escalating, follow the agreed process and protect the value the project delivers. Earned value basics (SV, CV, SPI, CPI) and agile ceremonies also come up regularly.
Study tips to pass the exam
- Use the Examination Content Outline as your map, not just a textbook.
- Practise hundreds of situational questions and write down why each wrong option is wrong.
- Memorise the earned value formulas with flashcards and check them with quick calculations.
- Take at least two full-length timed simulations before exam day.
Career opportunities
PMP holders work as project managers, programme managers, PMO leads and delivery managers across IT, construction, healthcare, finance and government.
