Introduction

ITIL 4 is the most widely used framework for IT service management. The Foundation certification introduces its vocabulary and core ideas and is a common requirement in service desk, operations and IT management roles.

What is ITIL 4 Foundation?

It is the entry level of the ITIL scheme, now managed by PeopleCert. It focuses on how organisations co-create value with customers through services.

Exam structure

The exam has 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, and you need 26 correct answers (65%) to pass. It is closed book and can be taken online with a proctor.

Key concepts to master

  • Key definitions: service, value, outcome, cost, risk, utility and warranty.
  • The four dimensions of service management.
  • The service value system and the service value chain activities.
  • The seven guiding principles, such as "focus on value" and "start where you are".
  • The purpose of the most important practices: incident, problem, change enablement, service desk and more.

Study tips to pass the exam

ITIL Foundation is mostly about precise definitions. Learn each one as a flashcard, then practise questions that ask you to tell similar concepts apart, such as incident versus problem or utility versus warranty.

Career opportunities

The certification supports service desk analysts, IT operations staff, service managers and consultants, and it is a stepping stone to the higher ITIL modules.
