Introduction
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is one of the most requested cloud certifications in job postings. It proves you can design systems on AWS that are secure, resilient, fast and cost-effective, and it is often the first serious step after the Cloud Practitioner.
This guide explains what the exam measures, how to organise your preparation and how to use active recall so the services and trade-offs actually stick.
What is the Solutions Architect – Associate certification?
It is an associate-level exam aimed at people with roughly a year of hands-on experience designing workloads on AWS. Questions are scenario-based: you read a short business situation and choose the architecture that best meets the stated constraints.
The current version of the exam (SAA-C03) uses multiple-choice and multiple-response questions, with results reported on a scaled score from 100 to 1,000 and a passing score of 720.
Exam structure
The exam contains 65 questions to answer in 130 minutes. Some questions are unscored and used by AWS to evaluate future content, so treat every question seriously. The content is split into four domains:
- Design secure architectures (about 30%): IAM, encryption, network security, access to data.
- Design resilient architectures (about 26%): multi-AZ, decoupling with SQS and SNS, backup and disaster recovery.
- Design high-performing architectures (about 24%): caching, storage classes, database choices, scaling.
- Design cost-optimized architectures (about 20%): purchase options, storage tiers, right-sizing.
Skills covered in the exam
You need to recognise which service fits a requirement and why the alternatives are worse. Typical decisions include S3 storage class versus EFS versus EBS, RDS Multi-AZ versus read replicas, Application versus Network Load Balancer, or when to use a VPC endpoint instead of a NAT gateway.
The fastest way to learn these trade-offs is to write them as questions: "A company needs X under constraint Y, what should it use?"
Study tips to pass the exam
- Weeks 1–2: core services (IAM, VPC, EC2, S3, RDS) with hands-on labs in the free tier.
- Weeks 3–4: resilience and performance patterns, then decoupling and serverless.
- Week 5: cost optimisation and security deep dives, using the official exam guide as a checklist.
- Week 6: timed practice sets, then review every wrong answer until you can explain it.
- Every day: 10 minutes of flashcards with spaced repetition on service limits and use cases.
Career opportunities
The certification is relevant for cloud architects, cloud engineers, DevOps engineers and developers who design on AWS. Employers value it as evidence that you can reason about trade-offs, not just click through a console.
