CompTIA Security+ Certification Guide: Domains, Skills and Study Tips

Introduction

CompTIA Security+ is a vendor-neutral certification that many organisations use as the baseline for security roles. It covers the core knowledge every security professional needs, from threats and controls to incident response.

What is Security+?

It is an intermediate-entry certification. CompTIA recommends some IT experience, ideally with Network+ knowledge, but it is not mandatory. The certification is valid for three years and renewed through continuing education.

Exam structure

The current exam (SY0-701) has a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple-choice and performance-based questions where you configure or analyse something in a simulated environment. The passing score is 750 on a scale of 100 to 900. The five domains are:

General security concepts (about 12%).
Threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations (about 22%).
Security architecture (about 18%).
Security operations (about 28%).
Security program management and oversight (about 20%).

Skills covered in the exam

You will be asked to identify attack types from a description, choose the right control for a risk, read basic logs, understand cryptography concepts such as hashing versus encryption, and apply incident response steps in the right order.

Learn acronyms with spaced-repetition flashcards: there are hundreds of them.
Practise performance-based questions early; they take longer than multiple choice.
During the exam, flag long simulations and come back to them after the quick questions.

Career opportunities

Security+ supports roles such as security analyst, SOC analyst, systems administrator and junior penetration tester, and it meets the baseline requirement of many public-sector security positions.
